Every year, students die from sudden cardiac arrest.
Genesys Heart Institute is hoping to help prevent some of those deaths with free student heart screenings on Saturday. They will conduct free heart screenings for students ages 12 to 19 on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at their Downtown Flint Health Center located at 420 S. Saginaw Street.

Routine sports physical exams do not include cardiac-specific screening and the screenings at Genesys will help to identify any pre-existing heart conditions and any signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) - a serious heart condition that is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

The heart screening at Genesys will include the following:

  • a review of the student's health history questionnaire (online as part of registration process)
  • a blood pressure check
  • a physician evaluation
  • an electrocardiogram

Pre-registration is necessary. To sign up, go to www.genesys.org/studentheartscreenings, or call 1-855-GENESYS (1-855-436-3797). Time slots are expected to fill quickly.
