Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has announced charges will not be filed against an officer involved in a shooting in Flint Township this past summer.

On July 16th, an officer from the department stopped a car on Flushing Road for speeding. During the stop, the officer asked the driver for consent to search the vehicle and the driver gave consent. Three people exited the vehicle but a fourth, 23-year-old Dominique Lewis, jumped into the driver seat and began to drive away. A backup officer who had arrived to the scene tried to get Lewis to stop and after the vehicle was driven at them, officer fired shots at Lewis, striking him. Emergency aid was given by an officer and a physician who was passing by. Lewis was transported to Hurley Medical Center where he later died.

A search of the vehicle later revealed a loaded pistol under the front passenger's seat and ammunition matching the gun was found in Lewis' possession. The gun was later found to be stolen. Leyton said charges would not be issued since the officer involved was acting in self-defense.
