Knowing that he holds strong views on the issue, I reached out to Friederich Nietzsche for comment on the current kerfuffle over Hilary Rosen’s suggestion that Ann Romney had “never worked a day in her life”:

DrP:  Herr Nietzsche, thanks for your time.  Does Hilary Rosen have a point?

FN:  Of course not.  A woman’s first and last profession is to give birth to strong children.

DrP:   Aren't you afraid that will turn off independents?  Why not say it was a personal career choice, as Ann Romney did?

FN:  Because it’s much bigger than that.  Wherever the industrial spirit has triumphed over the military and aristocratic spirit, woman aspires to the economic and legal self-reliance of a clerk.  ‘Woman as clerk’ is inscribed over the gateway to the modern society we have entered.   This isn’t a matter of making the right career choice; ‘should I become a dentist, work at Wal-Mart, or stay home with the kids?’  It is a choice between shallow modern ideas and return to nature, a vigorous ascent to a new, terrible, and thereby creative, nature.

DrP:  What’s wrong with saying, Mitt made a boatload and Ann wanted to stay home and raise her boys?

FN:  Fine.  But it is more than a “career choice,” is my point.  Mitt Romney allowed this choice.

DrP:  Paron me?

FN:  Well, as you put it, “Mitt made a boatload…”  A prudent woman gets herself taken care of by such a man, who, as man, is given to view her as a creature that must be maintained, taken care of, protected, and indulged like a more delicate, strangely wild, and often pleasant domestic animal.  A prudent woman must reject the modern effort to talk men emphatically and loquaciously out of this notion.  A prudent woman nourishes it with cunning humility, and through it, rules.

DrP:  Yes, well, thank you for your time, Herr Nietzsche.

FN:  You’re welcome.
