State Senator Jim Ananich of Flint has been elected the next leader of the Michigan Senate Democrats replacing the outgoing Senator Gretchen Whitmer who was term limited. The announcement came on Thursday afternoon and Ananich will begin his leadership term in January when members elected to office earlier this month are sworn in.

In a statement, Ananich said  "out focus will be on getting results on the issues that matter to people's daily lives." Ananich, a former public school teacher and Flint City Council member, is finishing a partial term he began after winning a special election last year. He was just reelected on Tuesday to serve his first full four year term. Ananich is currently serving as the Democratic Ranking Member of the Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee and as member of the Health Policy, Economic Development and Transportation Committees.

It was also announced that State Senator Morris Hood III of Detroit would serve as floor leader.
