Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has charged a Flint teen with the sexual assault and robbery of an 87-year-old woman on the city's southwest side.

Denzel Berry, 18, of Flint, has been charged with four felony counts including criminal sexual conduct first degree, home invasion first degree, unarmed robbery and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

According to police at around noon on October 15, 2012, the victim had returned from the grocery store and was carrying her groceries into the rear entrance of her home when she was attacked from behind and knocked to the ground. The attacker then sexually assaulted her, stole money from her purse, and took jewelry from inside the victim's home before fleeing. The victim then phoned her neighbor who came over and called 911 and the victim's daughter. Evidence in the case led authorities to berry as the woman's attacker.

Leyton said "this is one of the most heinous crimes I have had to review as prosecutor. We will do all we can to see that justice is served in this case and that Denzel Berry is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Berry will be arraigned in 68th District Court. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
