At their meeting on Wednesday night, the Flint School Board voted to lay off more than 250 non-instructional staff as they attempt to reduce a $10 million budget deficit.

According to WNEM, non-instructional staff includes clerical, maintenance, secretaries, food service and school safety employees. Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins says the cuts will help the district save $5 million. Watkins also said the district is looking to outsource the duties of the positions cut Wednesday night and those laid off will have the opportunity to apply with that company.

A proposal to shut down Northern High School was also on the agenda of Wednesday night's meeting, but that decision was tabled. The school is currently used as an alternative education building, but the proposal calls for the alternative ed to be shifted to Northwestern Academy.
