Fall is in the air as volunteers prepare for the year's last Adopt-A-Highway pickup along state roadways. Participants in the Michigan Department of Transportation program will be picking up litter beginning on Saturday, September 20th and running through Sunday, September 28th.

State Transportation Director Kirk Steudle thanks the volunteers for "working hard again this year to help keep Michigan roadsides clean and beautiful" adding the efforts are more important than ever especially after the harsh winter "that overwhelmed road maintenance budgets statewide."

This is the third scheduled pickup this year following spring and summer pickups. Volunteers - which include civic groups, businesses and families - have been participating in the program since 1990 and in 2013 volunteers reported collecting 70,000 bags of trash which amounted to a $5.5 million value to the state.

Sections of highways are still available for adoption. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/adoptahighway.
