Starting today (October 18), some employees of the Huntington Independent School District in Lufkin, Texas will be carrying loaded weapons on campus.

The Huntington ISD board passed the policy allowing staff members to carry guns back in March, with an effective date of October 18, 2013.

Superintendent Eric Wright said the board approved the new policy in response to the fatal shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December. Twenty children and six adults were killed in that incident.

Wright goes on to say that before school district employees were allowed to carry weapons on campus they were required to have their concealed carry permits and underwent several training programs that included a firearms proficiency test, a psychological evaluation, an active shooter class and a firearms safety course.

District officials will not be releasing the names of the armed employees.

What do you think? Should more school districts allow teachers to carry weapons? Answer in the poll below and leave a comment with your thoughts.
