The fate of James Bond’s casting in the upcoming 25th official 007 adventure is the focus of more intrigue than many Bond movies. After the release of Spectre, Daniel Craig said things like “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists” when the subject of making a fifth Bond film came up. He wanted to move on, he said. He was ready for something else, he said.

That was almost a year ago. Since then, there’s been no definitive word, although rumors have linked actors like Tom Hiddleston to the role. There’s no question: There will be another Bond movie, and someone will be playing the role of 007. But who?

A new report in Variety makes it sound like even the filmmakers don’t quite know for sure yet. In an interview with the BBC, Bond series producer Callum McDougall said that Craig is still “first choice” for Bond 25. The full quote:

We love Daniel. We would love Daniel to return as Bond. Without any question he is absolutely Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli’s first choice. I know they’re hoping for him to come back.

So where does that leave us? In limbo, for the moment. There’s a man wanted for the job, but does the man want the job? Given that he was talking about a suicide alternative to the job, maybe not. But that was a year ago. Making these Bond movies is a brutal undertaking for Craig; the years of prep, production, and a worldwide promotional tour. It can take a lot out of a guy. After a break (and the promise of tens of millions of dollars), would he change his mind? We’ll see.
