The new program Consumers Energy is rolling out this spring is called Power Peak Savers. It it free for customers, and completely optional.

How the program works, is Consumers Energy will come out to your home and install a device on your air conditioning unit. The unit will cycle your air conditioner on and off in 15 minute increments on super hot summer days between the hours of 12am and 8pm.

If you want to give Power Peak Savers a try, you have to have a smart meter installed in your home. Consumers Energy will give you $25 to sign up for the program, and expects your savings to be around 10 percent through the summer.
