Some Denver Broncos fans are publicly pressuring Denver coach John Fox to make a change at quarterback by spending $10,000 to purchase space on two billboards in the heart of the city begging Tim Tebow to take over the team’s offense.

Tebow has begun the season on the bench behind starter Kyle Orton.

Forty-Four People Die When Plane Carrying Russian Ice Hockey Team Crashes

Forty-four people were killed when a Russian jet carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team for the Kontinental Hockey League’s first game of the season crashed on takeoff on Wednesday.

It’s just the latest accident this summer involving Russian airliners — two other accidents killed a total 54 people which has led to calls for stricter safety guidelines.

49ers-Raiders Preseason Game Marred By Shootings, Leaving Two Wounded

Two fans were shot in a Candlestick Park parking lot fight after the 49ers beat the Raiders 17-3 in a preseason game on Saturday. One of the men was seriously wounded. A suspect has been arrested in the attack.

The incident should remind some fans of the San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten up by two Dodgers’ fans back in March. And, separately, during Saturday’s football game, 26-year-old man was assaulted and knocked unconscious in a bathroom.

Female Pakistani Squash Player Carries on Dream in Spite of Taliban

Maria Toorpakai Wazir, a rising star in the sport of squash, grew up in rural Pakistan where her father, fearing retaliation for violating strict Pakistani tradition, “encouraged everyone to think she was his son,” reports the Toronto Star. After Toorpakai became more well-known, the Taliban reportedly threatened her if she’d continue playing because it considers women wearing shorts to be obscene.

Toorpakai, 21, decided it was time to leave Pakistan to continue pursuing her dreams, and she landed in Toronto in the spring to study and train with Canadian squash legend Jonathon Power. Power believes that Toorpakai has what it takes to be the best in the sport.

University of North Dakota to Drop Its Fighting Sioux Nickname

The “Fighting Sioux” will be all but gone by the end of the year.

That was the ultimate decision that University of North Dakota officials made, heeding the call of the NCAA which said the term is offensive to Native Americans. They will retire the nickname of its athletics program and implement a new name for the school early next year. After private meetings were held with leaders of the NCAA, and amid mounting pressure, the school opted to back down and accept a name change.

Bubba Smith, ‘Police Academy’ and NFL Star, Dead at 66

Charles Aaron “Bubba” Smith, who was a feared defense end for the Baltimore Colts and found a Hollywood career in retirement, was found dead at his home on Wednesday. He was 66. The cause of death has not yet been announced.

Perhaps best known for his role as Lt. Moses Hightower in the ‘Police Academy’ film series, the 6-foot-7 Smith was the number one overall pick in the 1967 National Football League draft and played nine seasons in the NFL.
