Heading into the Memorial Day Holiday weekend, law enforcement across the state are stepping up enforcement of seat belt regulations.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says the annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign gets underway today and was kicked off with an advertising campaign last week. The effort through Memorial Day travel weekend includes local police, sheriff's offices and state police and is funded through federal traffic safety funds.

The goal is an attempt to increase seat belt use and reduce traffic deaths and injuries. Seat belt usage was at 93 percent last year down from a high of nearly 98 percent in 2009.
