After returning more than 75,000 teddy bears left behind at its hotels and discovering many belonged to adults, Travelodge commissioned a survey to find out just how many grown-ups still sleep with the stuffed animals. What the hotel chain found may surprise you.

A survey of 6,000 British adults showed more than half still have a teddy bear from their childhood, and 35 percent of the people surveyed take teddy bears to bed with them, saying they help reduce stress and make it easier to sleep.

If you think that’s shocking, take a look at some other tidbits the survey found:

  • The average teddy bear in Britain is 27 years old.
  • Fifteen percent of men and 10 percent of women regard their teddy bear as a confidant, sharing intimate secrets with it.
  • Twenty-six percent of male respondents said it was acceptable to have a bear regardless of age, but that doesn’t mean they flaunt it — 10 percent of single men admitted hiding their teddy bear when a woman spends the night, and 14 percent of married men hide the plush toys when family and friends come to visit.
  • Twenty-five percent of male respondents take a teddy bear with them when they go away on business trips, with many saying they do it to remind them of home and that cuddling with the bear helps them sleep
