In today’s world of the super-expensive everything, more kids are making the decision to stay at home with their parents well into adulthood rather than get out on their own.

However, while this idea might sound like an ingenious plan for a kid with a cold feet complex, oftentimes this decision comes with a little added stress — for the parents.

According to the results of a new Lifeline’s Stress Poll, parents with adult children living with them at home are more stressed out than those whose kids are living elsewhere and only see their children on the occasional weekend and holidays.

As a matter of fact, the poll reveals that parents with “kidults” still living at home report a 94 percent overall stress level compared to a 90 percent for those living sans child.

This should come as no surprise considering that parents who continue to allow their adult children to take advantage of a rent free environment not only suffer from additional financial stress, but their relationships tend to suffer, as well.

Experts say that if you are going to allow your adult children to live in your house it is important to set strict ground rules, which should include drawing up a lease that clearly outlines the child’s responsibilities – no free rides!

While parents have a tendency to feel obligated to their children, no matter how old they are, experts add that you should not sacrifice all your life for your kids. There has to be a balance.
