Gas prices have dropped about 24 cents from last week, AAA Michigan reports.

Michigan's current statewide average is about $2.23 per gallon, down about a dollar from the same time last year. This is the sixth week in a row that statewide average weekly gas prices have dropped and the lowest they have been in over five years.

Of the cities surveyed by AAA, the cheapest price for self-serve unleaded fuel can be found in the Flint area, where it's about $2.07 per gallon. The highest average is in the Marquette area at about $2.46 a gallon.

AAA says barring any unexpected spikes in global prices, or declines in domestic production, the price at the pump should remain relatively low approaching the New Year and into 2015. The drops in prices are attributed to "sluggish global oil demand combined a with an abundant supply." The national average has dropped almost 25 percent since the beginning of the year.

AAa surveys 2,800 Michigan gas stations daily. For more information, visit www.AAA.com.
