On Labor Day, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will lead an expected 40,000 walkers across the Mackinac Bridge beginning at 7 a.m.

According to a news release from MDOT, walkers can start across the bridge up to 11 a.m. and buses will be available to bring walkers from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace for $5. Details of the walk are available on the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) website at www.mackinacbridge.org.

To help ensure the safety of all participants, the Michigan State Police (MSP) will be conducting searches of purses, bags and backpacks for all walkers. To avoid delays, walkers are being asked to leave their purses, bags and backpacks in their vehicles if the contents aren't essential.

Bob Sweeney, MBA executive secretary, said "we appreciate all participants' willingness to submit to a search, or to leave their bags in their vehicles. That will help make the walk safe and enjoyable for everyone."
